Today brings back to me some very special memories that I would like to share.

Many years ago my wife and I were travelling eastward from Dieppe France a narrow rural road. We had just left Dieppe after walking on the pebbly beach and visiting the memorials to the men who lost there lives there. Anyway as we travelled along beside the farmers fields, we saw a small memorial on the area between the road and a field. We stopped and there was an area about 15' in diameter in beautiful maintained and mowed grass. In the centre of the area laid out in white flowers was a Canadian Flag and laid out in red flowers was a Maple leaf. At the edge of the grass was a small plaque on it was written [in French] " Here on the 19 August 1942, 12 Canadians fell".
As Gail and I were standing there, the farmer whose field we were beside came by pulling a Hay bailer with an International tractor. When he saw us he stopped, got out of the cab, and while standing on the cab steps, gave us the one of the sharpest and snappiest salutes I''ve seen.
I couldn't resist, returned it in the best RCAF manner I could muster.
The farmer bowed his head turned into the cab and continued Bailing.
I returned to that area a few years ago and found the road but, the memorial is gone. The road has been widened and the area where the memorial was is now part of the road. I have to admit I had wet eyes when I saw that.
I like to think that the memorial has been move to another location.
Sorry for the long story, but, I thought some others might like to hear it on this day.

Carm.
